Description
Mid-Century armchair similar in style to Marco Zanuso's "Lady Chair." Newly reupholstered in a slate grey / pale teal mohair. Space age silhouette with curved arms and brass-capped feet. Sourced in Italy.
Marco Zanuso (1916–2001) was an influential Italian architect and industrial designer, widely recognized as a key figure in postwar modern design. Educated at the Politecnico di Milano, Zanuso initially worked as an architect before transitioning into industrial design, where he became known for integrating new materials and technologies into everyday objects.
In the late 1940s and 1950s, Zanuso collaborated closely with the Italian manufacturer Arflex, where he helped pioneer the use of foam rubber and elastic webbing in seating. His designs from this period—such as the “Lady” armchair—combined comfort, mass production techniques, and modern aesthetics, contributing to the evolution of contemporary upholstered furniture.
Zanuso also worked in partnership with German designer Richard Sapper, producing iconic electronics for Brionvega, including radios and televisions that blended advanced engineering with bold, sculptural forms.
Throughout his career, Zanuso received numerous accolades, including multiple Compasso d’Oro awards. His work is held in major museum collections worldwide and remains a cornerstone of mid-century Italian design, valued for its technical innovation, functional clarity, and enduring visual appeal. -
