Description
The design philosophy of the 1970s in Germany was often focused on functionality and ergonomics, but with a playful twist. There was a tendency to mix and match styles and materials, resulting in eclectic pieces, like this pair of cross base lounge chairs. The designs were often modular and adaptable, catering to the dynamic lifestyles of the time.
German designers were influenced by the broader contemporary European trends, including the Danish and Italian modernist movements. There was also a strong influence from the avant-garde and the counterculture movements, which encouraged experimentation and the breaking of traditional design norms. The frames, crafted in solid wood, celebrate craftsmanship while maintaining a striking simplicity. The low, grounded stance gives the pieces a quiet strength, at the same time the broad seats invite relaxed, informal lounging. As a pair, the chairs are both understated and iconic, a reminder that modern design is not about excess, but about clarity and intention. More than just functional elements, they reflect a postwar European ethos that embraced innovation while remaining deeply connected to craft and the human experience of comfort. Upholstered in an off-white fabric, the chairs pair a tactile, inviting surface with the clean lines of their timber base, achieving a compelling balance between warmth and restraint.
While the second half of the 20th century saw the takeover of mass production and many - now iconic - futuristic designs, this pair preserves the value and beauty of master craftsmanship and exquisite materials. Countering the often vivid colours and designs of the era, the beautiful wooden frame is paired with light-toned upholstery.
