Description
Produced by Thonet in early 20th century Austria, this bentwood chair illustrates the company’s mastery of steam-bent wood and its contribution to the evolution of modern furniture. During the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) period, Thonet expanded its formal vocabulary beyond purely functional café chairs, introducing more expressive silhouettes while maintaining structural clarity. The gently curved frame and scrollwork backrest demonstrate this balance, where fluid lines are integrated into a disciplined and lightweight construction.
Executed in bentwood with an upholstered seat, the chair combines technical innovation with everyday comfort. The visible patina and wear to both wood and upholstery add depth and authenticity, reflecting decades of use. As a product of Thonet’s industrial yet highly refined production, the piece embodies a moment where craftsmanship and mass production were brought into harmony, resulting in a timeless and enduring design. -
