Description
Although the designs of the mid-century era were wide-ranging in style, they often shared such characteristics as clean lines, organic shapes, and functionality. These elaborate armchairs are on the more ornamented end of the design style, yet, they still appear modern.
While in the United States, designers adopted the improved technologies and materials coming out of WWII embracing mass production, in much of Europe, designers created a distinctive style by handcrafting their furniture and using such natural materials as wood, wicker and leather. These chairs belong to the latter, both geographically and aesthetically. The evidently handcrafted wooden structure has carefully carved edges with a scalloped pattern. The carved edges of the seat, back and legs aren’t the only ornamentations on the design; the woven straw panels of the backs and seat, the box stretchers and curved arms are all decorative features that make this pair visually arresting. While mid-century design is generally restrained, woodworking often showed off the skills of the craftsman. The seats and back panels are made of durable woven twisted straw, with a light colour. The partnership of the two natural materials is very effective as well; the wood and wicker pair flawlessly
Handmade mid-century modernist furniture pieces like these chairs, expressed ideals of usefulness and minimalism in the sculptural lines of shaped wood. The carefully crafted lines and natural beauty - with its imperfections - of the wood make this pair ideal accent chairs.
