Description
Known as “Functionalism” in its Nordic home, the Scandinavian modern style developed in the first half of the 20th century following a new aesthetic that prioritized clean lines, and natural materials. Quality and craftsmanship were hallmarks of the era alongside functionalism. Mid-century Scandinavian designers (like the Gustavian-era craftsmen that came before them) worked with paler colour palettes that kept light bouncing around interiors in a region known for its short days and long winters.
Like the design movement, these easy chairs are as much about a lifestyle as they are a look: clutter-free and disciplined. Their elegant, minimal silhouettes rely on the scalloped backs as the main decorative elements. The curvature creates an inviting and open look, enhanced by the visually sectioned backs. As a result, they do immediately stand out and dictate the overall impression. The thick seats add a lot of volume to the design, keeping it grounded and cosy. The lacquered square legs in the back and the sculpted conical legs in the front are a pleasant touch, adding straight lines to the otherwise round edges. The warm brown colour of the wood nicely contrasts to the soft, light colour of the bodies, not to mention that wooden feet make a long-lasting, rock solid foundation for any chair. The textured fabric further enhances the versatile curves and shapes and contributes to the elegant, organic look that is a cornerstone of mid-century Scandinavian design aesthetic. Master cabinetmakers were also highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities. Therefore, this pair not only provides support for the back, but also great sitting comfort.
Through decades of changes in styles and preferences, the various iterations of what has come to be called Scandinavian Modern have managed to go on “speaking” to consumers, collectors, and design aficionados. Most importantly to users, even in rapidly changing cultures. These mid-century easy chairs show why.
