Description
Mid-century designers started taking cues from styles like the Bauhaus and the International Style movement, which explored the idea of function over form. The furniture from this period is some of the most iconic in the world for a good reason; in this armchair’s case: an uncluttered, uncomplicated design that is as functional and comfortable as it is timeless.
Material quality was critical to mid-century design. Next to a very early emphasis on wood, the fabric choice was just as important in the case of upholstered chairs like this armchair. The cabinetmaker of this chair put an emphasis on soft elegance and functionality, making it timeless in every sense of the word. Its elegance is the result of the subtle decorative elements, such as the tufted buttons on the front and back, and the simple lines comprising the chair’s form. The design features a welcoming, “bear-like” shape and simple lines guided by a soft curves. Despite the embracing shape formed by the arms and back, the design still appears open. Another subtle feature are the stained beech legs that are tapered and lightly splayed in the back in a characteristic mid-century modern manner, while their warm colour complements the soft green upholstery.
The craftsmanship of this chair’s cabinetmaker was evidently of the highest quality, and the maker had a great sense of proportions. This beautiful, inviting armchair lives up to its mid-century European heritage both in terms of design and quality, which is further elevated by the luxurious upholstery.
