Description
Axel Einar Hjorth, Nordiska Kompaniet, Swedish Mid-Century Modern, Birch, Rare "Birka" Chairs, Sweden, 1930s
A rare and complete set of six “Birka” dining or side chairs designed by Axel Einar Hjorth (Sweden, 1888–1959) for Nordiska Kompaniet in the 1930s. Axel Einar Hjorth served as the lead designer for Sweden’s Nordiska Kompaniet department store from 1926 to 1938. Each example features clean lines and curved backrests typical of Hjorth’s restrained modernist approach. The upholstered drop seats maintain a later upholstery. A significant example of Hjorth’s refined yet utilitarian aesthetic, produced during his influential tenure as chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet. Our gallery has the matching "Birka" model sideboard (with its original NK label) available as well; please inquire for more information regarding this case piece.
Birch Veneer, Fabric; Sweden c. 1930s
Provenance: Acquired in 1937 at the Nordiska Kompaniet store in Stockholm by Ingerd and Bernhard Badt. The couple emigrated to the United States in the spring of 1938, bringing the set with them after being advised, “you cannot buy furniture like this in the United States.” The pieces have remained in the family ever since; the set has been acquired directly from the couple's daughter.
