Danish "Model 55" Club Chair by Oskar Hansen Copenhagen, Denmark 1930s

  • Description
Through the 19th century, Denmark had a very strong tradition of cabinetmaking, or producing traditional furniture by hand. In the early 20th century, these cabinetmaking traditions began to merge with modern technology and design, creating many of the most memorable models of Danish design history.

The qualities of this early modern club chair include simple, clean lines without excess decoration, leaving the focus on the shape and materials. The fully upholstered body has a wide, open design profile. As this model is a traditional club chair design, it has arms to enhance its comfort and functionality. At the same time, the arms - like the backrest - curve outwards which is a purely aesthetic element. Like most club chairs, the arms form a single unit with the back, enveloping around the sitter. Further adding to the comfort is the generous seat cushion that beautifully showcases the upholstery’s interesting texture. The upholstery’s elegant, subtle colour complements and highlights the beech legs’ colour as well. The front legs are vertical, and the back posts are splayed below the seat. It is this detail of the construction that gives the chair a lighter and more elegant and stylish form where four straight and perfectly vertical legs could well have looked severe and too narrow and therefore, potentially unstable visually.

This modernist “model 55” club chair dates from many decades ago, yet, after almost 100 years, it still has that up-to-date look, as if it had just been designed. This is primarily thanks to its elegant and modern look, high quality materials, and of course, the level of craftsmanship of Oskar Hansen’s cabinetmaking workshop.
