Description
Scandinavian seating from the 1930s often balanced the geometric clarity associated with Art Deco with a growing interest in comfort and material warmth. Rather than relying on elaborate ornamentation, many Scandinavian designers focused on proportion, strong wooden framing, and carefully integrated upholstery.
This pair of Swedish armchairs reflects that approach through the restrained construction and strong architectural outline. The chairs feature solid birch frames, where the exposed wooden arms and legs create a strong outer structure that contrasts with the softer upholstered volumes framed within. The arms form clean horizontal lines before extending downward into the front legs, reinforcing the squared proportions of the design and connecting its elements. The upholstery is compact and tightly fitted across the seat, backrest, and side panels, giving the chairs a sleek appearance without excessive volume. The brown textile allows the light to reflect differently across its surface, while the visible birch introduces variation through its natural grain, preventing the composition from appearing one-dimensional.
The relationship between frame and upholstery is central to the design. This combination of materials gives the pair a unique character that feels elegant and highly adaptable within a variety of interiors.
