Pair of French 19th Century Directoire-Style Upholstered Fauteuils

A stunning pair of walnut Directoire style armchairs from France, circa 1870. The chairs have a cosmopolitan constitution that is expressed in the wonderfully turned legs, scrolled back, velvet upholstery and overall Directoire styling. The walnut frames are sturdy and beautifully patinated. The carved walnut arms lack their manchets, but could be replaced if reupholstered. The pair are still covered in the gold-colored velvet fabric that was present when we purchased them in France. It too has become “patinated” and could or could not be replaced at a later time, depending on your preference. Some of the brass nail heads that secure the velvet to the frame have come loose over the years, with the vast majority still intact. These fauteuils are comfortable. You and/or your guests will be able to sit comfortably for hours in these exceptional antique chairs.
