Description
This rare pair of easy chairs, produced in Sweden during the 1950s, embodies key elements of Scandinavian modern design through its thoughtful use of natural materials and craftsmanship. The frames are constructed from solid beech wood, chosen for its strength and fine grain, and shaped with elegantly curved armrests and rounded legs that balance structural stability with a softened, organic form. These wooden elements reflect a refined attention to detail typical of mid-century Swedish furniture.
The seats and backrests are crafted from thick natural leather, supported by a woven structure that provides both flexibility and comfort. The woven technique introduces a subtle texture contrast against the smooth leather surfaces, enhancing the tactile and visual appeal of the chairs. Over time, the leather has developed a rich patina, displaying natural variations in color and texture that contribute to the chairs’ vintage character.
Despite the anonymity of the designer, the chairs align stylistically and technically with the work of prominent Scandinavian designers from the era who emphasized the harmony between organic materials and functional form. The beech frames remain in excellent structural condition, showing wear consistent with age and careful use, which adds to their authenticity.
Measuring 64.5 cm in width, 60 cm in depth, 74 cm in height, with a seat height of 37 cm (approximately 25.4 by 23.6 by 29.1 inches, and 14.6 inches seat height), these chairs offer a balanced profile suited to various interior settings. They exemplify the mid-century Scandinavian focus on craftsmanship, material integrity, and understated elegance.
