Description
This pair of easy chairs exemplifies the craftsmanship of Swedish modern furniture and its understated luxury. The 1940s saw a departure from the ornate and glamorous Art Deco era toward a more refined and functional design period. While this period did not shy away from luxury, there was a more natural and organic feel to it thanks to increased use of wood and other natural materials.
This stunning pair of easy chairs, crafted in the manner of Erik Bertin Karlen, embodies organic elegance and tactile richness. The chairs feature a rather simple silhouette and since nature was a great source of inspiration during the making of this pair, sharp edges or corners can rarely be found. Without any ornamentation, the focus is on the rounded, flowing lines of the bodies and the luxurious upholstery. The longhair sheepskin features rich, warm tones that add chromatic texture to the chairs. Thanks to the colour variation of the sheepskin, the chairs can lend an earthy and cosy presence to any room in which they are placed. This material not only reflects the Swedish commitment to high quality materials but also showcases the design prowess of the era’s cabinetmakers. Furthermore, architectural precision is present in the subtle wingback backrests, which offer the sitter a charming embrace, even in the absence of armrests. It is this absence of armrests which emphasizes the open and inviting form, while allowing for the focus to remain on the materials. Supported by tapered wooden legs, this pair achieves a beautifully balanced aesthetic.
These easy chairs stand as a testament to the enduring appeal of Swedish design, and its philosophy of simplicity, comfort, and material integrity. Whether placed as accent chairs or as a focal point they are sure to add a touch of quiet luxury to any space.
