Pair of Upholstered Art Deco Armchairs, Europe 1930s

$ 10,450
  • Description
    Art Deco, a defining movement in furniture design, bloomed in an era of aesthetic creativity and resulted in iconic, instantly recognisable design pieces. As these armchairs show, European furniture designers’ approach was anchored in the characteristic refinement of the time, expressed through graceful forms and traditional methods.

    While Art Deco practitioners around Europe were often paying homage to modernist influences - such as Cubism, De Stijl, and Futurism - the references were indirect. This pair of Art Deco armchairs exemplifies these modernist influences through the chairs’ design, which lacks excessive ornamentation, yet radiates luxury and sophistication in their sharp, geometric frames. The angular, almost cubic elements of their form, from the backs to the armrests, and even the seat cushions, are bold and elegant. Cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritising comfort just as much as visual qualities, with this pair of armchairs providing ample support for the back and great seat depth, while still achieving visual balance.‎ Their rich upholstery creates the perfect environment for relaxation, while the plush padding enhances the sitting experience. At the same time, the short, dark-coloured legs offer sturdiness and stability, while still allowing the chair’s body to remain the focal point.

    European Art Deco’s unique touch is based on the unmistakable marriage between functionality and refinement. Pieces like this set showcase the classic and polished legacy of 1930s European furniture makers, whose designs can still be seamlessly integrated in contemporary interiors.
