Description
Throughout the 20th century, European designers explored new ways of making seating that balanced comfort with clarity of form. While modernist furniture is often associated with light, linear silhouettes and exposed structures, many designers sought a different balance. The result was seating that could act as a focal point without overwhelming a room, marrying everyday comfort with thoughtful proportion and material presence.
Though elements of Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern are markedly different, both styles value beauty, shape, and colour. In these armchairs, this is evident in the pronounced curve of the wooden arms that define the overall look. Since the arms create a hollow form, the beautiful upholstery is visible from the sides as well, further complementing the gentle curvature. The seats and backrests are fully upholstered in a warm burnt orange fabric with a soft, velvety surface. The upholstery emphasizes the generous padding contributing to a comfortable seating experience. To keep the visual balance, the backs and the lower structures feature straighter lines. The tightly upholstered seats and backs - while adding plenty of comfort and cosiness to the design - don’t take the attention away from the wooden structures, which shows the design skill of the maker. Each chair stands on short, square legs that echo the solid construction and frame the upholstered body without distracting from it.
This pair of armchairs exemplifies a tradition of European seating that values both comfort and design, making them a perfect choice for interiors that appreciate material honesty and functional refinement. The pairing of materials give them a distinctive but versatile presence, whether placed in a living room, study, or relaxed seating area.
