    Each with a rectangular seat covered in colorful floral needlework (French 2nd quarter 18th century), on faceted legs with "mushroom" cappings, and elaborately carved and pierced scrolled stretchers, Decoration refreshed. English circa 1690
    Provenance: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Bequest of Judge Irwin Untermeyer, 1973.

    A nearly identical model in carved walnut is illustrated in "The Dictionary of English Furniture," revised edition, 1954 by Ralph Edwards, volume 3, page 173, figure 31, then in the collection of Lady Asheton-Smith.
