Description
A striking pair of MP-97 lounge chairs designed by Percival Lafer, one of Brazil’s most celebrated modernist furniture designers. Produced in Brazil during the height of the Brazilian Mid-Century Modern movement, these chairs embody Lafer’s signature approach—combining sculptural hardwood frames with exceptionally comfortable, lounge-ready leather upholstery.
The MP-97 model is widely admired for its bold architectural form. Each chair features a beautifully constructed solid Brazilian hardwood frame with dramatic sled-style supports that create a floating appearance while maintaining impressive strength and stability. The deep, rich tone of the wood contrasts elegantly with the warm caramel leather cushions, highlighting the organic materials that define Brazilian modern design.
Suspended within the frame is Lafer’s ingenious sling-supported cushion system, where thick leather cushions are supported by internal straps and flexible suspension. This design allows the chair to subtly adapt to the sitter’s body, creating an exceptionally relaxed seating experience. The generous cushioning, deep seat, and softly contoured back cradle the body in a way that makes these chairs remarkably comfortable—true lounge chairs meant for long conversations, reading, or simply unwinding.
Unlike many modern chairs that prioritize form over comfort, Lafer masterfully achieved both. The MP-97 chair is known for its enveloping softness, giving the sensation of sitting in a supportive leather hammock within a sculptural wooden frame. The supple leather develops beautiful character over time, enhancing both comfort and visual appeal.
Percival Lafer’s work has become increasingly collectible as interest in Brazilian Mid-Century Modern furniture continues to grow globally. His designs stand alongside those of Sergio Rodrigues and Joaquim Tenreiro as defining examples of Brazil’s contribution to modern furniture design.
This pair of MP-97 lounge chairs works beautifully in a variety of interiors—from sophisticated mid-century settings to contemporary spaces seeking warmth and sculptural character. Their combination of architectural Brazilian hardwood, luxurious leather, and exceptional comfort makes them both functional seating and important design objects.
For collectors and design enthusiasts, these chairs represent a perfect example of Percival Lafer’s timeless Brazilian modern aesthetic—bold, relaxed, and incredibly comfortable.
