Description
Peter Opsvik is a Norwegian industrial designer best known for his innovative and ergonomic chair designs. As such, this set of barrel chairs are a true testament to his craftsmanship. Also referred to as a “tub chair” or “kubbestol”, the barrel chair takes its name from the overall shape of its body: cylindrical, often continuously so, to provide multi-plane back support with its rounded or slightly angled back.
One material that is often vastly underrated is pine. Noteworthy for its durability, this material is also beloved for its functional and aesthetic qualities. The pine’s grain and pattern is very appealing throughout the design of these chairs, which adds an organic touch to the design. This pair displays a beautiful contrast between the light pine frame’s colour and the elegant sheepskin fabric of the cushions. The upholstery is just as much a decorative element as the wooden structure. The lush sheepskin overflows from the pine seat frame, with the two materials pairing exceptionally well.
This beautifully crafted set truly lives up to its heritage both in terms of design and quality, which is further elevated by the luxurious sheepskin upholstery. These days the kubbestol has become a symbol of Scandinavian roots for many families with ties to Norway, Sweden, or Denmark. A reminder of rural heritage and a time when most things in and around the home were made by hand from materials found in nature.
