Description
9022 A FINE PAIR OF CARVED MAHOGANY ARMCHAIRS SIGNED “PETERS MAKER GENOA” Italian. Second Quarter Of The Nineteenth Century. Measurements: Height: 36 1/2″ (93cm) Seat Height: 17″ (43cm) Width: 23 1/2″ (60cm) Depth: 23 1/2″ (60cm)
Of mahogany. Each with rectangular upholstered back surmounted by a shaped crest carved with scrolling and foliate decoration, each downswept arm decorated with a carved anthemion and terminating in a scroll centered by a paterae. The upholstered seat resting on the frame raised on four legs, the front pair scrolled with anthemion and stiff leaf decoration and terminating in paw decoration, the rear legs of sabre form.
The present pair of chairs is by the Savoia court cabinet-maker, Henry Thomas Peters (d.1852). He established workshops in the former convent of Santa Brigida and advertised in the Gazette di Genoa of December 1836 the arrival of furniture imported from Paris. He received a silver medal at the 1846 Genoa Great Exhibition of National Manufactures and Products. He stamped his furniture ‘Peters Maker Genoa’. Peters was employed under the Piedmontese architect Pelagio Pelagi (d.1860) at the Palazzo Reale, Turin and at Castello Reale di Racconigi. -
