TSUKOMOGAMI SHEEP, bench, with bronze horns

These seats, benches or sculptures are made of concrete canvas and shaped into adorable sheep. For use indoors and outdoors they evoke a playful sense of abstract pets. They come with bronze horns or without, in plain grey or coloured in a vibrant neon palette or any other desired colour.
Tsukumogami (“artefact spirit”) are a type of Japanese spirit. Living inanimate objects. A series of experimental studies using Concrete Canvas. As concrete, the material possesses an inherent strength, and as a fabric – albeit quite a heavy fabric – it has an innate organic quality and movement. In its raw state, it can be seen as a finished product, not requiring polishing, sanding, or painting, which is required of any other material or process—an ode to François-Xavier Lalanne's sculptural sheep.
PHILIP MICHAEL WOLFSON, studied architecture at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York and at the Architectural Association, London, England, where he was mentored by Zaha Hadid. After completing his studies he spent the next ten years as head of design in her studio. In 1991 Wolfson established his own studio in London, and in 1999 in Miami, and has worked throughout Europe and the USA on interiors, focusing on functional and sculptural artworks shown at leading international art and design exhibitions, galleries, and public venues.
The works maintain a fascination with and examination of the construct of space and forms, through an apprehension of examples given by the early 20th century Modernist Movements, particularly, Constructivism and Futurism. Theoretical elements of the Concrete Poetry movement also serve as inspiration. His unique approach to functional sculpture, design and art is informed by the vigorous dynamics resulting from the fracture and fragmentation of form – layering and manipulating both 2 and 3-dimensional studies into fluid shapes and forms, where the movement of light, shadow and reflection is an integral part of the seduction of the work.
