Rare William and Mary Yewwood Stool
English, circa 1700

Exceptionally rare being in yewwood, the rectangular upholstered seat is raised on finely turned legs joined by box stretchers. The warm color and distinctive figuring of the timber give the stool tremendous character and surface interest, particularly against the restrained architectural form of the base.

Yewwood furniture from the William and Mary period is notably scarce, especially in smaller forms such as stools and side tables. The timber was difficult to source in wide, consistent sections and was used far less frequently than walnut during the period, making surviving examples highly desirable today.

The stool retains an elegant lightness in proportion and works particularly well beside a chair, a small table, at the foot of a bed, or as an accent in a layered interior where the unusual timber and strong silhouette can be appreciated.
