Rodney Winfield steel and brass altar chair
-
Description
A very rare, sculptural chair by American artist Rodney Winfield (1925 - 2017), made of steel with a melted-on brass finish. This chair was a prototype for the Temple Israel synagogue in Creve Coeur (St. Louis), Missouri. The building was designed by Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum (HOK) in 1962 and decorated by Winfield. He designed the large sculpture for the bimah (altar) and a number of chairs. The final version of the chair had a walnut seating, but this prototype version has one in steel.
