Unique Chaise Longue in Wicker by Salvatore Fiume, Italy c. 1960
-
Description
This rare and unique chaise longue was designed by Italian artist Salvatore Fiume, designed for his own home in Canzo, near Como in Italy, and manufactured by Bonacina c. 1960. Born in Comiso Sicily in 1915, Fiume was a celebrated Italian painter, sculptor, architect, writer and stage designer. A close collaborator of Gio Ponti, he was commissioned by the architect to undertake monumental paintings for the interior of the first-class lounges of both the Giulio Cesare and the Andrea Doria ocean liners. In 1949, Fiume famously created two large scale sculptures in wicker, the enormous Gallo and Soldato. Later that same year he produced designs for two unique chaise longues in wicker, for his own use, which included this rare and magnificent example.
