Description
Designed by Sergio Rodrigues circa 1958, the “Mucki” bench is a refined example of Brazilian modernist furniture, balancing structural clarity with a warm and tactile material presence. Executed in richly toned hardwood, the design is characterized by its elongated slatted surface, low horizontal proportions, and understated geometric framework. The rhythmic repetition of the wooden slats creates a sense of visual lightness while emphasizing the precision of the construction and the sculptural quality of the overall form. Restrained detailing and carefully balanced proportions reflect Rodrigues’ sophisticated understanding of craftsmanship and modernist design principles.
Emerging during a period in which Brazilian modernism was gaining international recognition, Sergio Rodrigues developed a distinctly Brazilian interpretation of modern furniture that moved away from the colder industrial language of European modernism. Instead, his work emphasized comfort, natural materials, and a closer relationship between furniture and everyday living. Deeply influenced by Brazilian vernacular traditions and the richness of native hardwoods, Rodrigues created designs that combined architectural rigor with warmth and informality. The “Mucki” bench embodies this philosophy through its honest construction, modular rhythm, and understated sculptural presence.
As one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century Brazilian design, Rodrigues became internationally recognized for combining modernist ideals with the expressive warmth of native materials and Brazilian living culture. Intended as a versatile architectural element within the interior, the “Mucki” bench functions equally as seating, a low platform, or a sculptural design object. More than six decades after its introduction, the design remains remarkably contemporary through its timeless proportions and understated elegance. -
