Description
Denmark has a long history of furniture-making. Through the 19th century, the country also had a very strong legacy of cabinetmaking, or producing traditional furniture by hand. In the early 20th century, these cabinetmaking traditions began to merge with modern forces to create simple and refined pieces like this dining chair set.
Smooth and unadorned, the design focuses on functionality yet does not stray from form. The chairs reveal an appreciation for the quality of the materials used and excellent craftsmanship. Embodying the ‘less is more’ principle, the frame of the chairs follows a beautiful rectangular symmetry, with legs tapering slightly and grounding the frame down. The back, consisting of several spindles offers the right amount of support and comfort for the sitter. The exquisite frame, in a warm-toned stained beech, is further highlighted by the bright colour of the seats’ upholstery. The upholstered seats are a visual treat, with an exquisite, blue patterned fabric. The fabric choice creates an elegant and modern look that is characteristic of Danish mid-century modernism. Overall, this set is stylish from all angles and seeks to complement its surroundings.
Danish Modernism has influenced Scandinavian furniture to a great degree, defined by minimalism, simplicity, and functionality. The simple colour palette and gentle designs make Danish mid-century furniture an ideal addition to contemporary living spaces. Additionally, master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities.
