Reference: A similar armchair with inlaid decoration is in the collection of Winterthur, see Montgomery, American Furniture The Federal Period, entry 60, pages 111-112. Note the similarity to the side chair, reference number 122, on pages 179-180 of American Furniture in Pendleton House by Christopher P. Monkhouse and Thomas S. Michie. They write that chairs of this kind were known as “square-back” and were one of the most popular chair designs among wealthy New Yorkers in the Federal period.
