This pair of “Macao” benches / ottomans by Stanley Jay Friedman for Brueton is a striking example of the seamless fusion of form and function that characterizes 1970s American design. Crafted with the durability and luster of thick stainless steel, each piece is finished in a sophisticated gunmetal gray that adds depth and modernity to the design.

Newly upholstered in black hair on hide, the cushions offer a textural contrast to the smooth steel, bringing an element of luxury and comfort to the benches. The scroll/waterfall curved legs are a testament to Friedman's ability to blend structural integrity with aesthetic fluidity, creating a form that is visually appealing and functional.

Each bench, measuring 16 inches in height, 24.5 inches in width, and 13 inches in depth, provides versatile seating or a stylish resting place for the feet. The inset upholstered cushions, sized at 16 inches wide by 13 inches deep, are meticulously crafted to complement the benches' sleek contours.

In very good vintage condition, the benches bear minor marks and scuffs on the lacquer coating of the gunmetal finish, a testament to their history and authenticity (see photos). These slight imperfections do not detract from their overall beauty but rather enhance their character.

Stanley Jay Friedman is not just a furniture designer but an influential figure in the modernist movement, known for his clean, boundary-pushing designs. An award-winning designer recognized for his visionary work and his contribution as a lecturer, Friedman’s creations, such as these Macao benches, reflect his forward-thinking philosophy and commitment to design excellence. They offer not only a seating solution but also a slice of design history, perfect for any space that values both minimalist modern form and function.
