Svante Skogh "Chile" Armchair for AB Klings Alingsås, Sweden 1950s

Sold Sold
  • Description
This pleasantly elegant armchair - together with a sofa - is from the “Chile” series by Swedish designer, Svante Skogh. His seating designs are exceedingly rare, especially the “Chile” series, making this chair all the more special from a design history perspective as well.

Like many of his Scandinavian modern contemporaries, Skogh designed furniture that utilized richly grained wood, mixed with soft, supple fabrics. This is clearly visible in this armchair with a design that dates to 1953 and has its roots in the Swedish Modern movement of the 1930s and 40s. Accordingly, the design is gentle and welcoming formed from timeless, quality materials. The welcoming shell-like seat leads the look enhanced by the elegant bouclé upholstery. The arms blend into the back with edges that slightly curve outwards, opening up the design visually. The seat cushion adds to the inviting look, while also providing great sitting comfort. The inviting body is supported by an expertly crafted wooden frame with tapered legs that are splayed for structural purposes.

Kling Möbler has a history of over 80 years. Einar Kling started his business in 1938 manufacturing furniture in Alingsås that was sold all over Sweden. Interestingly, the founder trained hundreds of Alingsåsers to become upholsterers and seamstresses in his factories in Holmalund and Kristineholm.

    About the designer:
Swedish designer Svante Skogh is best known for his mid-century designs produced by Seffle (sometimes written as Säffle), though he worked with a number of furniture producers throughout his career, which spanned the 1950s and ‘60s.

Although there is little information available on Skogh’s personal life or career development, many of his designs from the mid-century have survived and are highly sought after on the vintage market today.

His most well known of these designs was the Bodö Series (1957) of armchairs and sofas for Seffle, the rare Chile series designed at the very beginning of Skogh’s career, and the Cortina Series (1960s) for Seffle.
