Swedish 19th Century Gustavian Stool

This Gustavian stool was made in Sweden around 1810 in the restrained neoclassical taste of the period. The Gustavian style, the Swedish interpretation of neoclassicism, is reflected in the measured proportions and simple form of the stool. Stools of this kind were compact and portable, used as extra seating or as footstools and moved easily between rooms. The frame carries the painted or aged surface valued in Swedish period furniture. As a single piece, it suits use as a footstool before a chair, as occasional seating in a hall, or at the foot of a bed.
