Swiss Wooden Quadripod Stool, Switzerland ca 1960s
-
Description
Form and function collide in this Swiss stool, a piece of furniture that is often underestimated. Designers define stools as jewels and statements in a space, and taking practicality into account, this stool is perfect to add visual interest to any space. From Charlotte Perriand to Axel Einar Hjorth, wooden stools have been staples in European design history.
Switzerland is less talked about when it comes to mid-century modern design, for many people, it is basically synonymous with Helvetica—the very name of which in fact means “Swiss” (in Latin, Switzerland was the Confederatio Helvetica)—which was designed in 1957 and hit the market in 1960. However, Swiss design and designers past and present express and cultivate a unique identity based on minimalism, quality, functionality and innovation. This stool is on the more minimalistic edge of the Swiss design scale, with rustic details. The most outstanding is unquestionably the gouged seat as an aesthetic choice. The marks of the chisel are naturally unique, making this stool one-of-a-kind. The tenon and mortise joints are very appealing as well, holding the fours legs firmly. The combination of the quality woodworking and the minimalist design makes this stool a modern piece that fits easily into any space. It has rustic elements and a modern edge that is impossible to reproduce.
Being functional as well as aesthetically pleasing, this stool is a great addition to set the tone of a space. The design is strong but subtle, with expert craftsmanship, thanks to which it can add depth as well as functionality to a space. This stool is marked “Jufa Beschäftigung”, presumably the manufacturer based in Basel.
