Description
This rare pair of easy chairs, designed by Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen and produced by Robert Wengler in Denmark during the 1930s, exemplifies the synthesis of modernist form and artisanal tradition that characterized early Scandinavian design. Known for their pioneering contributions to Danish modernism, the Kindt-Larsens emphasized organic form, functional comfort, and material honesty, all of which are embodied in these elegant rattan chairs.
The frames are constructed entirely from high-quality rattan and cane, showcasing a complex yet restrained structure defined by continuous, flowing lines. The silhouette is sculptural, with a rhythm of curves that trace the armrests, seat, and backrest in a single visual movement. The openwork frame lightens the visual mass of the chairs while providing structural integrity and refined detailing. A soft patina has developed across the natural rattan surfaces, adding tonal richness and historical depth without compromising the material’s strength.
Robert Wengler, a master craftsman renowned for his work with rattan, produced the chairs with a meticulous weaving technique that is particularly evident in the seats and back panels. His expertise is revealed in the consistent cane spacing and tension, which enhance both visual delicacy and durability. The ergonomic design is further supported by gently curved armrests and a slightly reclined back, offering a balanced combination of support and relaxation.
Each chair is accompanied by a single back cushion, upholstered in a decorative textile featuring a detailed botanical motif. The pattern includes flora and fauna—birds perched among foliage—in earthy tones that harmonize with the natural hue of the rattan. The cushions exhibit minimal wear and retain their structure, contributing both comfort and a layer of visual interest.
Measuring 59 cm in width, 71 cm in depth, and 71.5 cm in height with a seat height of 37 cm (23.2 × 28 × 28.1 inches; seat height 14.5 inches), these chairs maintain compact, well-proportioned dimensions suitable for both residential and exhibition settings. The overall condition of the frames is excellent, with minor signs of wear commensurate with age and careful use.
This pair of easy chairs represents a refined and forward-looking interpretation of natural materials within the context of 20th-century Scandinavian design. Their blend of craft and modernist form, along with their provenance and exceptional preservation, makes them significant examples of Danish rattan furniture from the pre-war period.
