Description
This folding stool, designed by Uno & Östen Kristiansson and produced by Luxus in Vittsjö, Sweden, is a fine embodiment of Scandinavian modernism—combining elegance, precision, and utility in a compact form. Designed during the mid-20th century, the stool reflects the Kristiansson brothers’ dedication to honest materials and their pursuit of minimalist functionality with refined craftsmanship.
Constructed from solid oak, the stool’s frame reveals a warm, honey-golden hue and subtly expressive grain patterns that underscore the quality of the wood. The surfaces are smoothly finished, enhancing both the tactile experience and the visual clarity of the form. The X-shaped configuration of the base serves as both a structural and aesthetic device—allowing for a strong, stable stance while also offering a light and sculptural profile. This folding mechanism not only adds versatility for storage or transport but also pays homage to a tradition of functional, collapsible furnishings adapted for modern living.
The seat has been newly reupholstered in supple black leather, chosen for its durability and clean, contemporary character. The black leather provides a striking contrast to the oak frame, reinforcing the modernist palette while maintaining a sense of material warmth. The seat is tightly fitted and carefully finished, preserving the integrity of the original design while offering a fresh surface for everyday use.
Uno & Östen Kristiansson were influential figures in Swedish postwar design, known for their innovative work across furniture and lighting. Their collaboration with Luxus, a manufacturer based in Vittsjö, produced a wide array of thoughtfully crafted pieces that embody the principles of Swedish functionalism—clean lines, honest construction, and an enduring focus on usability.
This particular stool is in excellent vintage condition. The oak frame remains solid and well-preserved, exhibiting only minor wear consistent with careful use over time. The new leather upholstery is pristine, ensuring the piece is both functional and visually sharp for contemporary interiors.
A refined example of Scandinavian Modern design from the 1950s, this piece was produced by Luxus in Sweden and exemplifies the clean lines, exceptional craftsmanship, and thoughtful material combinations that define the era. The design reflects the restrained elegance associated with Mid-Century Scandinavian furniture, where natural materials and balanced proportions were favored to create objects of both beauty and functionality.
Crafted from oak and accented with brass details, the piece displays a harmonious interplay of warm and cool materials. The rich black leather introduces a sophisticated contrast to the organic character of the wood, while the brass elements provide subtle visual highlights and a sense of understated luxury. Its carefully considered proportions and simple architectural form embody the timeless aesthetic principles that made Scandinavian Modern design internationally influential during the postwar period.
The combination of leather, oak, and brass contributes depth, texture, and visual interest, while the quality of construction reflects the high standards of Swedish furniture production in the mid-20th century. Retaining the enduring appeal of its original materials and period character, this example serves as a compelling representation of Scandinavian craftsmanship and Mid-Century design sensibilities.
