Description
Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron, the iconic French design duo behind the Votre Maison workshop, were instrumental in shaping postwar French furniture design. Known for their expressive yet functional aesthetic, the pair developed a distinct style characterised by sculptural oak frames, bold proportions, and a deep commitment to craftsmanship. The "Maria" two-seater sofa, from the 1960s, is a vivid example of their inventive approach to form and comfort.
The sofa features a solid oak frame with sharply angled arms, six legs, and vertical slat detailing along the backrest, a hallmark of Guillerme et Chambron's structural language. The frame is striking through its composition, yet the look is enhanced even further thanks to the large, circular back cushions, which immediately draw the eye with their playful geometry. These forms contrast elegantly with the clean, linear rhythm of the oak structure, creating a piece that is both sculptural and inviting. The cushions are upholstered in a textured neutral fabric which add warmth and softness while allowing the architectural quality of the wood to remain in focus. The armrests offer visual weight and functional support, contributing to the sofa’s relaxed yet sturdy presence. Beneath the seat, the slightly arched stretcher introduces another thoughtful detail, emphasizing both strength and refined craftsmanship.
Ideal for interiors that celebrate character and quality woodwork, the "Maria" sofa stands as a conversation piece and a comfortable seating solution. Its beautiful silhouette, materials, and enduring construction make it a standout example of mid-century French design. Guillerme et Chambron's work continues to resonate for its balance of charm, function, and artisan quality, all of which are on full display in this distinctive piece.
