Description
This reclining sun chaise lounge, designed in the 1940s by Walter Gerdau, was originally produced for transatlantic voyages between Brazil and Europe. Conceived for luxury maritime travel, the design prioritizes comfort, durability, and mechanical precision.
The hardwood frame has been fully refinished, revealing a warm, refined surface with subtle signs of age that enhance its character. The chaise reclines into two distinct positions, supported by polished original hardware that remains in excellent working condition. Front legs fitted with wheels allow for effortless repositioning, reinforcing its functional intent. Upholstered in light-toned ultrasuede, the surface is exceptionally smooth and soft to the touch, offering a refined, contemporary feel while respecting the original form.
Remnants of manufacturer’s seal remains intact behind the backrest, confirming authenticity. Rarely surviving in such condition, this chaise represents an early intersection of Brazilian craftsmanship and international modern travel culture—an elegant artifact from a formative period in Brazil’s design history. -
