Wharton Esherick Curved Sofa, 1958 — Rare, Signed, Documented
This exceptional curved sofa by Wharton Esherick represents a landmark in American design. Created in 1958, it is the first sofa he ever designed and one of only four known examples.
Crafted for Lawrence and Alice Seiver of Villanova, PA, the piece is documented in Wharton Esherick: The Journey of a Creative Mind (Bascom, p. 219), where it is shown in its original setting.
Design & Materials:
Tulip poplar and walnut frame
Painted wood detailing between vertical slats
Signed and dated “W.E. 1958”
Upholstered in Dedar Vladimiro (62% Mohair, 38% Cotton)
Cushion updated in luxurious Italian cotton velvet, button-tufted for durability and comfort
Original cushion preserved and included
Provenance & Significance:
Known for his organic forms and sculptural approach, Esherick’s work helped define the American Studio Craft Movement. This sofa exemplifies his rare venture into upholstered furniture, blending functional comfort with artful construction.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear that enhances its authenticity. The reupholstered cushion offers renewed comfort, while the original is retained for historical integrity.
