Description
A hand-carved unique sculptural chair by Ian Spencer and Cairn Young of Yard Sale Project, the Corsican chair explores new possibilities and combinations in wood.
Challenging the traditional view of what a chair is, this unique work is both asymmetrical in form, as well as comprised of an astonishing array of over twenty five hardwood, an unprecedented accomplishment in wood.
When considering which timbers would complement each other and which would clash, Yard Sale Project discovered that with enough variety, such considerations become obsolete. Various timbers bring out an appreciation of each individual piece as opposed to their relation to one another: a chaotic mixture of woods becomes harmonious and balanced. Through both mathematical and artistic means, Yard Sale Project took to discover how to combine various woods, without being limited by the material’s grains capable of contracting or expanding. They developed the “Chaos Theory”, a method that, while still abiding by traditional techniques, allowed them to break free from the materials’ limitations.
Today, Yard Sale Project’s one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture combine the highly accomplished technical designs of Young with the master craftsmanship of Spencer. Yard Sale Project’s work resides in prestigious collections and has been exhibited worldwide at art fairs and museums, including the Roccapina V chair, exhibited in “Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft, and Design” at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, NY (March 19, 2013- September 15, 2013), Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. Florida (October 12, 2013 – January 20, 2014), and the Bellevue Arts Museum, Washington (March 7, 2014 – June 30, 2014).
As Yard Sale Project also works on a commission basis, custom pieces with bespoke dimensionality may be accommodated. The Corsican bench, also pictured, is an example of another sized seating option.
