Description
19th-Century English Gothic / Renaissance Revival Ebonized Oak Slant-Top Secretary.
Constructed from oak with a dark ebonized finish, this slant-top secretary desk features extensive high-relief carving. The exterior presents a fall-front lid with geometric molding centered by a diamond motif. The lower casework comprises four full-width drawers. The uppermost drawer is detailed with deep gadrooning, while the three lower drawers are carved with continuous foliate scrollwork integrating grotesque masks. The flanking stiles feature caryatid figures above scaled panels, terminating at the top with lion masks that conceal the pull-out lopers for the writing surface. The interior is fitted with a central tabernacle door flanked by open pigeonholes and two banks of four small stacked drawers. The piece rests on a molded plinth base. England ca 1850.
Dimensions: H: 42.1" (107 cm) | W: 55.1" (140 cm) | D: 26" (66 cm) - Open D: 40.2" (102 cm) | Writing Surface H: 29.9" (76 cm)
Condition: Structurally sound. The finish exhibits heavy surface wear and patination, most notably across the slant-top lid, protruding moldings, and drawer fronts, exposing the lighter wood substrate beneath the ebonized surface. Evidence of historical use includes edge abrasions, minor losses to carved extremities, and general finish degradation consistent with 19th-century origin. -
