Description
Reference 1041
English, ca. 1740
This exceptionally handsome walnut kneehole desk, dating of around 1740 is distinguished by its well preserved state and the exquisite quality and richness of its timber.
The front is veneered in beautifully figured fiddleback walnut, while both sides and top are solid walnut. The top displays a particularly dramatic and wild flame figure. The warm, untouched colour has developed a wonderfully deep, crusty patina, giving the piece an unmistakable sense of age, character and authenticity.
The large upper drawer contains a walnut-crossbanded, leather-lined writing slide, which conceals a fitted interior arranged with numerous partitions and several ingenious secret drawers.
The central recessed cupboard is flanked by three drawers either side, creating a beautifully balanced and architecturally pleasing façade.
Both the top and drawer fronts are delicately banded with fine chequer banding composed of holly and ebony, providing an elegant contrast to the richly figured walnut. Remarkably, the desk retains all its original handles, locks and ogee bracket feet.
A highly decorative and practical piece of period furniture, combining exceptional cabinetmaking, rare figuring and outstanding originality.
Its untouched surface and beautifully preserved patina make it particularly appealing to collectors seeking an honest and characterful example.
