This fine two-part chest of drawers, constructed in finely figured padouk and fitted with brass corner straps and carrying handles, reflects the practical construction and clean line characteristic quality of campaign furniture from this period. The upper section rests upon the lower case, fitted with two full-width drawers, the two stacking securely to conserve space and form a stable, compact unit when assembled for use. However, the whole is designed to separate for ease of transport. This chest of drawers underscores balance, durability, and practical design. The side bails reflect possible Chinese craftsmanship.
