Description
Antique French onyx, champlevé enamel, marble and ormolu pedestal clock
French, Late 19th Century
Height 136 cm, Width 41 cm, Depth 33 cm
An impressive French pedestal clock in green onyx, marble, and cloisonné enamel, this work exemplifies the luxury of late 19th-century decorative arts. Standing on a stepped marble base, the column is adorned with champlevé panels and finely cast ormolu mounts, including acanthus leaf capitals and beaded bands. A central lyre-shaped aperture reveals the pendulum, which concludes in a sunburst motif evocative of Apollo.
The cuboid clock case features a circular dial with Arabic numerals surrounding a floral enamel centre, encircled by an ormolu bezel. The corners are enriched with ormolu mounts, while the projecting top is decorated with enamel drapery forms and ormolu finials. Several mounts are stamped ‘CV’.
Combining technical excellence with decorative finesse, this distinguished clock makes a striking addition to any collection of 19th-century European decorative arts. -
