Macassar and Zebrano Bookcase by Axel Einar Hjorth, 1934

Price Upon Request
  • Description
This very rare bookcase, attributed to Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in collaboration with cabinetmaker Manfred Fredberg of Finnerödja, is an outstanding example of Scandinavian functionalist furniture from 1934. Crafted from richly figured zebrano and macassar woods, the piece features a striking grain pattern that accentuates its linear and geometric design.

The bookcase is composed of an open shelving system divided symmetrically into two sections, emphasizing clarity and balanced proportions. It originally formed part of a larger custom-designed furniture ensemble created for a Functionalist villa in Bromma, Sweden. This entire interior project was commissioned by NK Interior and produced by Manfred Fredberg, a craftsman renowned for his precision and quality, lending significant historical and artisanal value to the piece.

The construction exemplifies clean geometric lines, meticulous joinery, and a sophisticated contrast between wood species that underscores the attention to materiality and detail emblematic of Scandinavian Modernism. The bookcase has been carefully preserved, showing only minor signs of age-consistent use. The natural patina enhances the depth and warmth of the wood grain, contributing to its authentic vintage character.

The dimensions measure 235 cm in width, 30 cm in depth, and 75 cm in height (92.5 x 11.8 x 29.5 inches), making it a rare and elegant storage solution reflective of early functionalist ideals in Scandinavian furniture design.
