Description
Extraordinary, Empire / early Biedermeier Chest, Commode or Half-cabinet from Austria around 1815.
Beautiful book-matched dark walnut veneer on softwood. Two doors at the bottom, counter-veneered in cherry wood on the inside. Inside an interior made later and removable if required. Original locks and large wrought-iron latches. Two drawers. Upper drawer with interior fittings and sliding board in cherry wood. Original brass fittings with floral motif. An old gilded egg-and-dart rail around the cornice. Two ebonized pilaster columns with old gilded sphinxes as caryatids. Ebonized trims and upper edge.
Restored condition, hand-polished with shellac.
