Chippendale Paint-Decorated Blanket Chest
Pennsylvania, probably Berks County
Ca. 1775-1795
Poplar and white pine, polychrome paint decoration.
Over-all in fine condition; retaining original paint and oval cast brasses. Minor wear and losses to feet commensurate to age and use. One inch strip on the back edge of top restored.
Provenance: C.L. Prickett Antiques, Yardley, PA, 1998 (label affixed to drawer interior); Private Collection, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts.

This Chippendale blanket chest is most notable for its exuberant grain paint-decorated surface, which has survived in a remarkable state of preservation. The lid opens to an interior fitted with a till having a dove-tailed case above three drawers supported by ogee bracket feet.
