Description
Attributed to Dutch designer Cor Alons and closely related to furniture produced by Den Boer Gouda during the 1950s, this sideboard displays the sculptural side panels, recessed pulls and distinctive leg construction characteristic of documented Alons designs. Combining two drop-down storage compartments with three central drawers, it reflects the playful modernism, functional clarity and innovative use of curved plywood that defined Dutch furniture design in the post-war period.
Cor Alons (1892–1967) is considered one of the pioneers of Dutch modern furniture design. Trained at the Academie Minerva in Groningen and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, he developed a design language rooted in functionality, craftsmanship and architectural clarity. Throughout his career he designed interiors, furniture and industrial products, and became particularly influential through his collaborations with Dutch manufacturers such as Den Boer Gouda.
During the 1950s, Dutch furniture design embraced new production techniques and lighter forms, moving away from the heavy pre-war aesthetic. Designers such as Alons explored bent plywood, organic curves and visually light constructions while maintaining practicality and affordability. The present sideboard reflects these developments through its sculptural silhouette, curved side panels and elevated stance, characteristics that closely relate to documented designs by Cor Alons for Den Boer Gouda from the same period. -
