Description
A masterwork of American modern design, this exceptional credenza by Edward Wormley for Dunbar beautifully illustrates why Wormley remains one of the most celebrated furniture designers of the twentieth century. Combining handcrafted artistry with architectural precision, this rare cabinet showcases the sophisticated restraint that defined Dunbar’s finest production during the golden age of American modernism.
Expertly crafted in richly figured ribbon mahogany, the case displays dramatic chatoyance and a flowing ribbon grain that comes alive as light moves across its surface. The warm mahogany is complemented by one of the credenza’s most distinctive features—its beautifully executed woven tambour-style sliding doors, accented with solid brass rods that create a striking interplay of texture, light, and shadow. Resting on elegant solid brass legs, the cabinet appears to float effortlessly, giving the substantial piece a refined visual lightness.
Behind the woven sliding doors, Wormley’s thoughtful approach to organization becomes immediately apparent. The doors glide effortlessly on their original wheel-and-metal track system, operating with remarkable smoothness decades after they were built. At the center is a spacious storage compartment with an adjustable shelf, while each end houses a bank of five drawers, offering exceptional versatility for dining, office, or media storage.
The three top drawers feature carefully considered interiors. The outer drawers are lined in brown felt, making them ideal for storing silver, serving pieces, or delicate accessories, while the center drawer retains its natural wood interior. Each upper drawer is fitted with removable dividers, allowing the storage configuration to be customized for everything from flatware to office supplies or collectibles.
Adding to its authenticity, the credenza retains its original Dunbar plaque inside the top drawer—a hallmark of the exceptional craftsmanship and quality associated with one of America’s most prestigious furniture manufacturers.
Freshly restored by the craftsmen at Hobbs Modern, this Edward Wormley credenza highlights the extraordinary materials and meticulous construction that distinguish vintage Dunbar furniture from contemporary production. The combination of ribbon mahogany, sculptural woven fronts, solid brass detailing, and ingenious interior organization creates a piece that is as functional today as it was when it first left the Dunbar workshops.
Whether placed in a dining room, executive office, or sophisticated living space, this museum-quality credenza serves as both a practical storage solution and a timeless statement of American modern design.
