Description
This mahogany bookcase features two glazed doors with elegant geometric muntins in an X-pattern above solid paneled cupboards fitted with adjustable shelving for book storage. The piece is topped with a dark marble surface and retains its original brass hardware, showing the warm patina of age and use throughout its substantial frame.
Circa 19th century and later, this work reflects the Georgian tradition of combining display and concealed storage in a single piece, though modified over time to serve as a dedicated bookcase rather than its original secretary desk function. The quality of the mahogany construction and careful proportions demonstrate the enduring appeal of English furniture design adapted for practical household needs.
