Description
George Nakashima for Widdicomb
Origins Line Twelve-Drawer Dresser
United States, 1959
A twelve-drawer dresser designed by George Nakashima for the Origins line produced by Widdicomb Furniture Company dated 10/59. Constructed in East Indian Laurel veneer with solid walnut framework and details, the piece reflects the restrained material-focused approach associated with Nakashima’s work for Widdicomb during this period.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the design is the subtly bowed front edge of the top. The depth measures approximately 20.75 inches at the sides and gradually curves outward to approximately 22.25 inches at the center point across the 89.5 inch width. This slight shaping gives the case a softer profile and works particularly well with the movement of the East Indian Laurel grain.
The veneer throughout shows strong figuring with varied grain patterns across the drawer fronts and top. Nakashima frequently selected woods with active natural character, allowing the grain to become an important visual element within otherwise straightforward forms. The walnut framework provides contrast and structural definition.
The dresser contains twelve drawers with clean, balanced proportions typical of the Origins line. Introduced in 1958 and discontinued in 1963, the series remains one of the better-known collaborations between a studio designer and an American furniture manufacturer during the postwar period.
The dresser has been professionally restored and presents in excellent vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and use.
