Description
Attributed to Gerrit Rietveld and dating to the 1980s, this sideboard revisits the structural principles that defined his early work. The composition is built from an open framework of horizontal and vertical elements, emphasizing construction as a visible and integral part of the design. Rather than concealing its structure, the piece articulates each component, creating a layered and rhythmic architectural presence. Executed in light-toned wood, the material enhances the linear composition and reinforces a sense of clarity and balance.
The arrangement of drawers, compartments, and sliding elements is organized within this skeletal system, creating a dynamic interplay between solid volumes and open space. This approach highlights an ongoing interest in modularity and the relationship between function and form. Both functional and conceptual, the sideboard operates as a storage piece while simultaneously expressing a spatial composition, echoing principles associated with De Stijl and the idea of furniture as architecture. -
