Description
This narrow wooden cabinet, originating from the Cévennes region in southern France, dates to the 17th century and is traditionally associated with the period of religious conflict that shaped the region. Oral history suggests that such structures were positioned above concealed underground passages, forming part of discreet systems used for movement or refuge by Protestant communities during times of persecution. Originally open beneath and composed of removable elements, the cabinet is believed to have functioned as a concealed access point, later adapted with a fixed base as its use evolved over time.
Constructed in solid wood with a direct and unrefined approach, the piece exemplifies the vernacular craftsmanship of rural France. Its narrow, vertical proportions and simple internal arrangement emphasize utility, while the richly patinated surface, marked by wear, irregularities, and age, conveys a powerful sense of history. Beyond its functional origins, the cabinet stands today as a rare witness to a complex historical context, where ingenuity and discretion were essential to survival. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care. -
