Description
Important and Exceptionally Large George III Mahogany Chest-of-Drawers, after a design by Ince & Mayhew
England, circa 1770
Distinguished by its bold scale, superb color, and elegant serpentine form, the chest has five long graduated drawers within the main case, raised on a separate stand, giving the piece a strong architectural presence, almost functioning as a plinth. The richly figured mahogany veneers are exceptionally well chosen, while the restrained detailing emphasizes the strength and balance of the design.
Of particularly unusual height, standing nearly 50 inches tall, the chest possesses proportions rarely encountered in English furniture of the period. Retaining handsome period brass hardware and a fine, consistent patina throughout.
Formerly in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; deaccessioned in 2013.
With its impressive scale and refined silhouette, the chest functions equally well as a practical storage piece and a commanding focal point within an interior. Its clean lines and exceptional color allow it to translate effortlessly into both traditional and contemporary settings. -
