Description
Dimensions: 37” H x 69” W x 20” D
An endearing 18th century Italian hand-painted buffet that departs from the strong visual codes of the Baroque period adopting the relaxed manner of Louis XV and Gustavian polychrome furniture. The tone-on-tone blue cabinet is fitted with two doors on the front side, in between nicely canted corners interrupted by narrow, paneled sections filled with abstract gradients of blue in reference to the sky. The upper surface is a dark slate whereas the majority of the exterior is cerulean. Central panels on the doors have been treated as a cartouche for artistic expression to illustrate what appears to be the casting out of Adam & Eve from the garden of Eden and their circumstances following. A twist of the turned knob on either door opens to reveal a divided interior of two sections each with a shelf, 16 ⅝” deep. Above each door is a small drawer using Chinoiserie/Chippendale drop pulls, repeated again on the wide drawer that spans the front. Large, turned bun feet elevate the case from the floor. Please view the detailed images to see more of this allegorical antique buffet. -
